Experience the NOLA ‘Yum’ with Cooking Classes and Demos

Most everyone knows about the amazing food that can be had here in New Orleans.  From Creole favorites to French classics, and the dishes that meld the two, the tastes of NOLA are a true cultural experience.  And once visitors try the food, they realize that the flavors are very difficult to reproduce in other areas of the country.

But what if you get home and start craving the from-scratch jambalaya, beignets, and flavors that are so well-known here in the Crescent City?

Well you’re in luck.  It is, in fact, possible for you to learn how to bring true local flavors to your own table!  A number of restaurants and organizations offer hands-on cooking classes featuring local cuisine so that you can truly take the taste of New Orleans home with you.

Langlois Culinary Crossroads at 1841 N. Rampart St:  Learn (and get your very own hands dirty with) everything from the basics, to specialized tricks in small, personal, hands-on classes.  Three different classes are offered, focusing on Brunch, Late Lunch, and Dinner cooking.  The building itself has a lot of food history as well, having once been an Italian market.  Prices vary from $79-120.

Crescent City Cooks! at the Riverwalk Marketplace:  each cooking demonstration class offers instruction on three different local favorite dishes including different Gumbos, Etouffee, Pralines, Jambalaya, Bananas Foster and more.  $30 per person.

The New Orleans School of Cooking at 524 St. Louis St:  choose between cooking demonstrations and hands-on classes.  This school caters to larger groups (eight or more), so bring some friends!  Their General Store features NOLA-specific ingredients, food items, gift-ware, cookbooks, and items to populate your kitchen and bar.  $25-30 per person for demos, $125 per person for hands-on instruction.

The New Orleans Cooking Experience at 1519 Carondelet St:  enjoy wine and discussion from your spot at the kitchen counter during a close-up demonstration by a NOLA chef.  Afterwards, you’ll tour the 19th century home and feast on the fruits of the chef’s labor.  Is a 2.5 hour demo ($165 per person) not long enough?  Try a cooking vacation and enjoy a 2- or 3-day event ($310/410) featuring two classes… the 3-day event also includes a dinner out.

Avenue Inn offers a special Cookin’ with “Class” package option when you stay with us.  Featuring a two-night stay and a class at the New Orleans School of Cooking, you can enjoy learning how to make some of the local favorite foods, AND experience the warm welcome of our beautiful bed and breakfast.
