If you have questions about where to eat during your stay at the Avenue Inn Bed and Breakfast, you need only ask. Both Bebe and I (Joe) are well-versed in great local cuisine. And we aren’t afraid to direct you to lesser-known places, as well as those on the tourist lists (that are worth your time and taste-buds)!
In our never-ending quest to alert you to all-things-delicious in New Orleans, we’d like to bring something a little different to your attention. While we often direct you to one-of-a-kind eateries, we’re going to stray from the norm to direct your attention to a very casual family “chain” restaurant in the area surrounding Lake Pontchartrain: the New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co.!
Not fast-food, and not formal dining, each location has more of a sports-bar atmosphere and serves consistently-good food made with fresh local seafood and ingredients when possible. Think of it as Casual-Uptown: perfect for eating during a sporting event being shown on their big-screen!
A very popular menu favorite is their signature Thin-Fried Catfish. Crispy without the greasy taste, it is served either poboy-style or on a platter. However many will say that this unique dish is upstaged by the garlic herb french fries! And their onion rings are very lightly breaded in a pleasantly spiced batter that is delish!
Of course, there are also burgers – and burgers aplenty! A dozen house varieties are served classic-style (in regular or large sizes), and are offered in a grilled-chicken incarnation. All can be ‘dressed’ from the fixin’s bar.
And a NOLA eatery wouldn’t be a REAL eatery without a selection of poboys! Besides the catfish, ten other varieties are offered, including a vegetarian option! Salads, classic appetizers (including oysters – charbroiled and on the half-shell), and a small variety of Louisiana “comfort food” is offered to round out the menu. And yes, sweets, coffee, and beignets are offered as closers.
Adult beverage-lovers will be pleased: this eatery sells itself as an “Oyster Bar and Grill”, and 21+ beverages are available regularly on the menu in the form of beer, wine, and a full bar offering both your favorites, and a handful of specialty drinks!
Of course, the “best” thing about this restaurant is that it’s right next door to our bed and breakfast, so when you want quick, casual fare, it’s right there! And when you are in the mood for beignets, some say that theirs rival Cafe du Monde’s (but you didn’t hear it from us). So for hearty NOLA/American food that’s close to your favorite Inn on St. Charles Avenue, hop on over to New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Co. for a convenient meal with a family feel!
