Get Your Fine Art Fix at New Orleans Museum of Art

So you know all about our great food and events, but what about something more structured and/or cultured here in New Orleans?  Just 6.5 miles north of Avenue Inn Bed and Breakfast is the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), offering both indoor and outdoor art exhibitions and special events!

For over 100 years, the NOMA has offered Fine Art to our fair city.  While the initial display was a modest nine pieces, the museum has gown to its current permanent collection of nearly 40,000 items including paintings, photography, glass, sculpture, and more.  French and American art are heavily represented, although works from other countries are also in residence.  Not only will you find artwork, but also 18th and 19th Century furniture can be found in several rooms within the museum.

A number of exhibitions are offered throughout the year including themes, collaborations, biographical works, and art objects.  And the museum hosts Friday Nights at NOMA special events, which might include talks, movies, fashion shows, live performances, and more!

The museum also boasts a library resource center.  The Felix J. Dreyfous Library offers more than 20,000 art-related books and journals, free Wi-Fi, a computer workstation, and online databases for information.

Outside, be sure to see the five acres of sculptured gardens at the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.  More than 60 pieces from around the world are displayed on the beautifully landscaped grounds which feature live oaks, pines, magnolias, an abundance of flowers, paths, and bridges.

The museum and library are open from 10am-6pm Tuesday through Thursday, 10am-9pm on Friday, and 11am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.  Final admittance to the museum happens 45 minutes prior to closing.  The museum is closed on Mondays.  Admission prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $6 for children ages 7-17.  Bring your student ID for a discount, or visit on Wednesdays for complimentary admission!

The Sculpture Garden is open daily, from 10am-6pm during the week, and 10am-5pm on weekends.  Admission is free – please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to closing.

So if you have a taste for something a little bit different than Jazz and the “traditional” Big Easy activities during your stay at Avenue Inn bed and breakfast, wander up to NOMA to appreciate art from near and far.

Note:  Both the museum and the gardens are closed on all legal holidays.  Please leave large bags (larger than 11″ x 15″ x 5″) behind, as they are required to be checked at the coat-room if you bring them.
