New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival: Music, Food & Crafts

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is one of the biggest and best events in town. Presented by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, this yearly celebration of music and local culture is one to put on your bucket list (and we bet that once you attend, you’ll be back for more). This coming April 25, 26, 27, and May 1, 2, 3, and 4, 2014, the NOLA “Jazz Fest” will welcome star-studded lineups of music, heavy-hitters in the region’s culinary field, and master craftsmen of their arts. Avenue Inn Bed and Breakfast welcomes you as our guest during this exciting event!

Jazz Fest is held in Mid-City at the Fair Grounds Race Course, inside of, and around the 1.6km race course itself. Ten stages/tents will host the many concerts, at least five different food areas will provide sustenance, and two main craft areas will host the artists. Of course, all of these flow into and through each other, making for a great mix of the three at any one time. There is even a kids activity and food area for families.

While the list of crafters does not traditionally get posted before the event, you can bet that there will be a wide variety of creations available at all event locations.

Food at the event will come from some of Louisiana’s best kitchens, celebrating the flavors of our great region. Cajun, Creole, fresh flavors grown locally, and signature dishes and drinks from area restaurants!

As for music… well, you just wouldn’t believe it. Rock, Pop, Rap, Classic Rock, R and B, Jazz, Country, Gospel, Progressive, Oldies… you name it, and the music will probably be at Jazz Fest 2014! And we’re talking some HUGE industry names here, including those considered masters of their instrument, legends of their genre, and really tough acts to follow. Right beside them are current chart-toppers and up-and-comers who are well on their way to becoming their own legends, whether it be nationally, regionally, or locally.

We’d say that we hate to name-drop, but of course we’d be lying. The 2014 Jazz Fest has booked names that are easily recognizable – some to just about everyone, others to specific generations, and yet others to genre-specific fans:

  • Eric Clapton
  • Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
  • Santana
  • Phish
  • Christina Aguilera
  • Robin Thicke
  • Foster the People
  • Arcade Fire
  • Alabama Shakes
  • Public Enemy
  • The Avett Brothers
  • Branford Marsalis Quartet
  • Charlie Wilson
  • Allen Toussaint
  • Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters
  • Chaka Khan
  • John Fogerty
  • Lyle Lovett
  • Boz Scaggs
  • Al Jarreau
  • Johnny Winter

  • Solange
  • Better than Ezra…

Seriously, the list goes on and on.

Four different ticket options are available for the festival:

A single-weekend ticket will grant admission EITHER April 25, 26, and 27, OR may 1, 2, 3, and 4. Advance price is $55, gate price is $70. Kids tickets (ages 2-10) are $5.

The Big Chief VIP Experience* is THE way to fully experience the big shows of Jazz Fest with premium benefits! This admission ticket grants re-entry privileges so you can come and go as you please, gives access to special viewing stands at two main stages (Acura and Samsung Galaxy stages) which are raised and covered to give you a clear view and protection from the weather, and access to private restrooms. Semi-private access is granted to three additional stages (Congo Square Stage, Jazz Tent, and Blues Tent). You’ll also receive access to a VIP Hospitality Lounge, special access to beverage concessions, the ability to purchase Reserved On-site Parking, and a Jazz Fest Program Guide. Cost is $1125 for the first Festival Weekend, and $1300 for the second Festival Weekend.

To see your favorite stars up-close and personal, a Grand Marshal VIP Pass* gets you “mosh-pit” access at the Acura Stage, Samsung Galaxy Stage, and the Congo Square Stage! You’ll also have re-entry access to the Festival for the dates purchased, and can further upgrade to Reserved On-site Parking. Cost is $750 for the first Festival Weekend, and $900 for the second Festival Weekend.

The Krewe of Jazz Fest VIP Pass* is an upgraded ticket that provides special viewing at the Acura Stage only with upgraded chairs, dedicated restroom facilities, and a special beverage concession area. You can also purchase Reserved On-site Parking with this ticket. Cost is $550 for the first Festival Weekend, and $650 for the second Festival Weekend.

When you choose Avenue Inn Bed and Breakfast for your Jazz Fest lodging option, transportation to the Festival is a snap. You won’t have to worry about traffic or parking: just walk out our front door and take the St. Charles Streetcar to Canal Street. From there, catch the special shuttle bus from the Sheridan Hotel that will take you directly inside the fair grounds. At the end of the day, you will have a shuttle waiting for you to bring you back to Canal Street and then back to the Inn via streetcar. Or, as a second option, you can continue on via streetcar by taking the Canal Street line to New Orleans City Park – the fairgrounds and Jazz Fest are just across the bridge on Esplanade Avenue! The second choice is more economical, but keep in mind that the crowds for the return trip home will be very strong for the trip home and you will have to wait a bit to get on a streetcar from City Park. Please note, the streetcar system has been under renovation for the last two years. It is scheduled to be completed fully before Jazz Fest. But just in case, alternate transportation between streetcar stop points has been provided at no additional charge by the city.

Of course, it’s always nice to return to the peace and quiet of NOLA’s Garden District after a crazy, crowded day. Once here, you can get a bedtime snack form the dining area, spend some time on the patio recounting your day, or simply retreat to your welcoming guest room – the choice is yours!
