With its embrace of beignets, New Orleans has turned fried dough into a beloved tradition. The slightly sweet, powdered-sugar-dusted treat is on every visitors must-try list. Though they’ll never taste quite the same without the ambiance of the Big Easy, this recipe will let you enjoy beignets at home too.
Beignets with Strawberry Sauce

1 cup water
1 cup milk
1 egg, beaten
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 Tbsps. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 tsps. granulated sugar
5 quarts vegetable oil
3 pints strawberries
½ cup granulated sugar
Mix water, milk, and egg in small bowl.
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and 2 tsps. sugar. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and mix well.
Heat oil to 350°. Using a tablespoon, drop batter by into the hot oil and cook until brown on one side. Turn over and cook an additional 3½ to 4 minutes.
Remove beignets and drain on paper towels.
Sprinkle beignets with powdered sugar.
In a blender or food processor, puree the strawberries and sugar. Serve with beignets.
